茶碗は、茶室という空間の中で鑑賞すべきものである。 そうでないと、茶碗は真(まこと)の姿を見せてはくれない。 茶碗鑑賞には、茶室という閉鎖的な空間と、その室内の光がとても重要である。 利休は、名物や唐物がなくても、それに匹敵するだけの芸術性を持った茶室という空間を創造した。これは画期的なことだ。 それは、名物や唐物の茶碗を用いず、今焼の茶碗で茶を飲んだことにも相通ずる。 ならば、現代作家の茶碗で茶を飲むのであれば、それに相応しい現代の茶室が必要だと言いたいところだが、逆に茶室があるからこそ、茶道具があるということも言える。 すなわち、茶室の空間に合わせて、茶道具の寸方が決まるということである。 茶の湯の楽しみは、茶室の中にあると言っても過言ではない。
林屋晴三氏は、著書『名碗は語る』の中で「茶碗というものは、『観る』というよりも、『語り合う』ものではないか。そして語りの深いものが『名碗』ではないかという心境に至った」と書いている。 茶人として生きた、いかにも林屋氏らしい言葉だ。 さらに、「しかし、『雪の曙』(川喜田半泥子作の茶碗)のあと、これを凌ぐほどの茶碗を誰も造っていないことは確かであり、今を生きる私としては残念なことでもある。茶の湯の名碗を造れる時代は去ってしまったのであろうか」と投げ掛けている。
今回、市野雅彦(60歳)、板橋廣美(73歳)、金重愫(76歳)、田中佐次郎(84歳)、加藤清之(90歳)の五名の作家に、渾身の力を込めた茶碗六盌の制作をお願いした。 私の願いを聞いて下さった五名の作家には、心から御礼を申し上げたい。 なぜならば、作家にとって100%満足のいく茶碗などないからである。 だからこそ、渾身の茶碗に挑戦することに意味があるのだと思っている。ダイレクトメールの茶碗は、それぞれの茶碗の姿を出来る限り正確に伝えたくて、新宿 柿傳の茶室「一与庵」にて撮影した。 茶碗鑑賞のポイントである口造りと高台、それと見込みを掲載したが、図版が小さいので、ぜひ会場にて実物を観ていただきたい。 それでは、五人の作家と茶碗をご紹介しよう。
五人の中で一番若いMasahiko Ichinoが、今年還暦になった。 昔は「茶碗造りは五十を過ぎてから」と言われた時代もあったが、もう遠慮せず茶碗を造ってもいいだろう。 初代市野信水は高麗茶碗写しの名人であったが、この茶碗を見ると、間違いなく市野もその血を引いている。 茶碗を茶室に置いて眺めていると、高麗茶碗の名碗の姿が思い浮かぶが、これは正真正銘《丹波赤ドベ茶埦》である。 丹波篠山の弁天の田土を用いて、赤ドベで化粧掛けしている。 田土に含まれる黒い粒々が独特な風合いを醸し出している。 そして、掌に取ると赤ドベ特有のやさしい温もりが伝わってくる。
板橋廣美の茶碗は高台から造り始める。 それは、必ずしも丸い高台ではないが、高台本来の本質からは外れていない。 高台をバーナーで焙りやや固めてから、土が柔らかいうちに茶碗の形に仕上げる。 既成の茶碗の概念に捉われず、土がなりたい形を探る。 口造りは意識せず、自然に成った形に筋目を入れて切る。 制作方法が変われば形も変わるというのが、いかにも板橋らしい発想だ。 《椿灰白化粧茶碗》は、白化粧の上に椿灰を掛けて1260°で焼成したもの。 化粧の上の淡い錆色が椿の花を思い起し、お茶の色と合わせて侘びを感じさせる。 本展には、そうした様々な方法で制作された種類の違う茶碗が出品されるという。
じっくり語り合う茶碗として、数多い備前焼作家の中から、私は金重 愫の茶碗を選んだ。 なぜならば、この茶碗は作家に似て寡黙であるからだ。 じっくり語り合うなら、饒舌な茶碗より寡黙な茶碗の方がいい。 this《備前茶盌》は、胡麻と焦げと光沢を抑えた赤褐色の土肌が、静かな幽玄の美を醸し出している。 高台周りのヘラ削りにも、作家の深い想いが感じられる。 それは決して目立つことなく、それでいて金重愫のゆるぎない美意識に支えられている。 高台と見込みは、ずっと眺めていても飽きない。 本展には備前焼以外の茶碗も出品されるという。 どんな茶碗が出品されるのか楽しみである。
Sajiro Tanakaの茶碗は、どれも躍動感に溢れている。 this《唐津皮鯨茶垸銘「荒磯浪」》の高台を観ても、その激しさが感じられる。 大きく波打つ口造りを眺めていると、どこからともなく押し寄せては返す波音が聞こえて来る。 この茶碗には「荒磯なみ ありかつ君を いとど待つ 千鳥なきそね 岸の松風」という作家自詠の和歌が添えられている。 意味は、荒浪が磯に打ちかける激しさと同じように、私の胸の内は愛しい君を更にお待ち致します。 千鳥よ、鳴かないでおくれ。私は岸辺にある松に強い風があたるように耐えておりますというもの。 茶碗から生まれた作者の恋歌である。
Kiyoyuki Katoは昨年90歳になった。 これまで私は、加藤の《灰釉茶碗》に対して、「茶に媚びず茶を飲める唯一の茶碗」と評してきたが、昨年の新作茶碗を見ると、そうした意識すら超えているように感じられた。 真に自由の境地を極められたのか、心の赴くままに造形も模様も表現されている。 《黒土白泥彩茶碗》は、轆轤造りではなくタタラ造りによるもので、加藤の強靭な造形力と研ぎ澄まされた感覚によってモダンな茶碗に仕上がっている。 さらに、口縁がべベラになってとても躍動感に溢れている。 この作家の造る茶碗は、どれも清潔感が漂い、心が洗われるようで気分がいい。

This new, powerful ventilation system ensures that all the air in our gallery is replaced every 15 to 20 minutes.
