Yasushi Okada is the 9th generation of the Okada Kiln, a traditional Hagi ware pottery family with a history of over 200 years dating back to the Edo period. He is one of the most promising young ceramic artists today, pursuing new possibilities with the clay of Hagi. After graduating from the sculpture department of Tokyo Zokei University, I studied ceramics in Kyoto and apprenticed under my father, Yutaka. In 2013, she received the Kikuchi Biennale Encouragement Award, in 2015 the Japan Ceramics Exhibition Excellent Work Award and the Mainichi Shimbun Award, and in 2019 the Contemporary Ceramics Hagi Grand Prize Exhibition V Excellence Award.
In addition to the five basic tastes of sour, bitter, sweet, spicy, and salty, vegetarian cuisine also includes the term "subtle taste." This is the basic principle of vegetarian cuisine: a light flavor that doesn't overpower the natural taste of the ingredients. The pale blue glaze created by Mr. Tai also brings out the natural texture of the clay while evoking a refreshing, light blue color reminiscent of the Sea of Japan.
This "Pale Blue Glazed Faceted Flower Vase" has a unique, rounded form that reflects Mr. Tai's gentle and understated style. Furthermore, the "White Glazed Kiln-Fired Ash-Covered Tea Bowl" shown in the photo above has a pleasant triangular shape and a beautiful ash-covered finish, expressing a world of wabi-sabi unlike anything seen before.

| Biography Biography | Born in Hagi City, Yamaguchi Prefecture in 1976. Graduated from the Department of Sculpture, Faculty of Fine Arts, Tokyo Zokei University in 2002. 2009: Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition (Selected 12 times since then) 2013: Received the Kikuchi Biennale Encouragement Award, exhibited at the 60th Anniversary Exhibition of the Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition, "From Crafts to KOGEI". 2015 Japan Ceramics Exhibition: Excellent Work Award and Mainichi Shimbun Award 2016 Yamaguchi Traditional Crafts Exhibition: Japan Crafts Association Yamaguchi Branch Chief's Award 2017: Energia Art Award, Yamaguchi Prefecture Arts and Culture Promotion Encouragement Award 2019: Contemporary Ceramics Hagi Grand Prize Exhibition V - Excellence Award He studied under his father, Yuu Okada (a holder of Yamaguchi Prefecture's designated intangible cultural property, Hagi ware). |

A request to our valued customers We have placed alcohol-based hand sanitizer at the entrance of our gallery and the building. We kindly ask that you disinfect your hands upon arrival. Please wear a mask whenever possible when you go out. Currently, if you have a fever or are feeling unwell, we kindly ask that you refrain from visiting the gallery. If you have visited a doctor or taken medication for fever or a cold within the past two weeks, or if you have traveled abroad, we kindly ask that you refrain from visiting the gallery. To help reduce crowding in the store, we kindly ask that you visit in small groups whenever possible. We regret to inform you that we will be temporarily suspending our tea service, which we normally offer to our customers, including the gyokuro tea. 2. Our gallery's initiatives We will be taking extra care to ventilate our gallery. In addition to using exhaust fans, we will keep the entrance door open at all times. We will further strengthen our daily cleaning procedures. We regularly disinfect with alcohol on frequently touched surfaces such as elevator buttons, tables and chairs, entrance door and toilet handles, brushes and pens, even during business hours. If our gallery becomes crowded with many visitors and we determine that it is in a state of "three Cs" (closed spaces, crowded places, and close-contact settings), we may ask you to limit entry to our gallery. Our gallery staff will wear masks (but they'll be smiling underneath! ^^), and will thoroughly monitor their temperature and health while serving customers.
