Introduction
Introduction

When creating his artwork, Kiyoyuki Katou first eliminates anything unnatural.

By eliminating any unnatural elements one by one, I create a form that I am satisfied with and carve lines that I am satisfied with.

That is Mr. Kato's approach to pottery making, which emphasizes cleanliness.

I previously wrote that Mr. Kato's ash-glazed tea bowls are the only ones that allow you to drink tea without pandering to the tea itself, but looking at his new tea bowls, I feel that they transcend even that kind of thinking.

Approaching 90 years old, it seems he has truly reached a state of freedom, expressing himself through form and pattern as his heart desires.

This particular black clay and white slip-painted tea bowl was made using the slab-building method rather than the potter's wheel. Kato's strong shaping ability and refined sensibilities have resulted in a modern tea bowl, and the beveled rim gives it a very dynamic feel.

This exhibition will feature a variety of captivating works, including black clay and white slip painted tea bowls, ash glaze tea bowls, and yellow Seto tea bowls that showcase this new artistic direction, as well as flower vases and miniature flower vases.
