When Roland Barthes 's paintings arrived in Japan in 1985, 46 volunteers formed the "Bright Room Society" to prevent these precious watercolors, which resemble the diary of a philosopher, from being scattered and lost. This method of collecting works of art was unprecedented in the world.

To confirm that the "Bright Room" is a shared space, each participant brings their artwork together for a public exhibition every two years, and a lottery is held to determine which artwork will be kept by each participant for the following two years. This exhibition opportunity for the lottery is also a good opportunity to make Roland Barthes 's paintings widely known to the public, allowing them to become familiar with this unique philosopher's open way of thinking and his sensibilities.
