We are pleased to announce that, in the final month of the centennial anniversary of the birth of Professor Yoshimichi Fujimoto, we will be holding an exhibition of works by his disciples, thanks to the kind arrangements made by Takashi Yasuda of Kakiden Gallery. I am extremely pleased and grateful. The teacher has passed away.27Year after year, each of the disciples has become independent, carrying on their teacher's teachings while expressing their own worldview and dedicating themselves to pottery making. I think that not only the apprentices but also all the graduates of the ceramics course at Tokyo University of the Arts were influenced in some way by him, in their way of thinking, their drinking habits (laughs), and everything else. Although I wasn't an apprentice myself, I was often taken out drinking and learned a great deal from him. Because Professor Fujimoto was such a lovable character, his students truly dedicated all their time and energy to his work. I don't know what he thought of the work of his academically trained disciples, but seeing that they all continue to create pottery energetically today, I am reminded once again that he was a wonderful teacher as well as an artist. During his heyday, he produced a lot of excellent work, and coupled with the economic bubble, his opening parties were lavish, and the business was booming, which in turn energized the entire pottery world. It may not be quite the same atmosphere as back then, but I'd love to get together with everyone again, reminisce about our teacher, and have a slightly more extravagant get-together. The venue is wonderful, and the works on display are incredibly diverse. I sincerely hope you will come and see them.

| Biography Biography | □ Hokuto Ito Born in Nakano Ward, Tokyo in 1961. Graduated from the Department of Crafts, Faculty of Fine Arts, Tokyo University of the Arts in 1987. 1989: Completed graduate studies in ceramics at Tokyo University of the Arts, studying under Professor Yoshimichi Fujimoto. In 1993, a kiln was built in Hino City, Tokyo, and a joint exhibition was held at Nihonbashi Mitsukoshi Main Store. 2003: 43rd Japan Traditional Crafts New Works Exhibition, East Japan Branch Award 2015: Auditor for the 55th East Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition 2017: Selected for the 7th Kikuchi Biennale. 2018: 58th East Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition, Mitsukoshi Isetan Award 2019: Work exhibited at the 66th Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition purchased by the Imperial Household Agency. Currently a full member of the Japan Crafts Association. □Takayuki Umemoto Born in Nakano Ward, Tokyo in 1962. Graduated from the Department of Crafts, Faculty of Fine Arts, Tokyo University of the Arts in 1986. 1988: Completed graduate studies in ceramics at Tokyo University of the Arts. 1990: Studied under Professor Yoshimichi Fujimoto In 1993, he built a kiln in Hannō City, Saitama Prefecture, and became independent. 1997: Part-time lecturer, Department of Crafts, Tokyo University of the Arts 2002: Traditional Crafts New Works Exhibition - Japan Crafts Association East Japan Branch Chief's Award 2007: Associate Professor, Faculty of Fine Arts, Aichi Prefectural University of the Arts 2014: Created a ceramic panel for Seto City's Tozo Park, titled "Colored Ceramic Panel with Seasonal Flower Designs." 2017: 48th Tokai Traditional Crafts Exhibition, NHK Nagoya Broadcasting Station Director's Award Currently, Professor at Aichi Prefectural University of the Arts, Full Member of the Japan Crafts Association, and Member of the Seto Ceramic Art Association. □Akashi Kageyama Born in Shizuoka Prefecture in 1950. Graduated from the Department of Crafts, Faculty of Fine Arts, Tokyo University of the Arts in 1975. 1977: Completed graduate studies in ceramics at Tokyo University of the Arts, studying under Professor Yoshimichi Fujimoto. 1984: Built a kiln in Yasato-machi, Ibaraki Prefecture, and established an independent workshop. 1986: Solo exhibition at Nihonbashi Mitsukoshi (held 10 times thereafter) 2002: Exhibited at the Ibaraki Prefectural Museum of Ceramics, "Vessels and Decorations" exhibition. Currently a full member of the Japan Crafts Association and a member of the Ibaraki Crafts Association. □ Nobuhiko Sueoka Born in Fukuoka Prefecture in 1948. 1973: Studied under Professor Yoshimichi Fujimoto 1989: Built a kiln in Daimon, Ome City, Tokyo, and established my own studio. 1992 Solo exhibition in Nihonbashi, Tokyo In 1993, I established a workshop in Saku City, Nagano Prefecture. Currently, part-time lecturer at Bunsei University of Art and Aichi Prefectural University of the Arts, and full member of the Japan Crafts Association. □ Makoto Takahashi (deceased) Born in Saitama City, Saitama Prefecture in 1948. 1976: Completed Master's degree at Tokyo University of the Arts Graduate School, studying under Professor Yoshimichi Fujimoto. In 1986, he built a kiln in Nebukawa, Odawara City, Kanagawa Prefecture, and became independent. Since 1987, I have held solo and group exhibitions in various locations every year. 2002: Crafts Association East Japan Branch Award 2007 Japan Crafts Association Award Died in Chuo Ward, Tokyo in 2013. □ Masahide Hashizume Born in 1959 in Tateshina, Nagano Prefecture. 1984: Graduated from the Department of Crafts, Faculty of Fine Arts, Tokyo University of the Arts. 1985: Selected for the Traditional Crafts East Japan Branch Exhibition (and subsequently selected 28 times). 1986: Graduated from Tokyo University of the Arts Graduate School, studying under Professor Yoshimichi Fujimoto. 1993: Built a kiln in Ome City, Tokyo, and became independent. 1995: Selected for the Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition (and subsequently selected 13 times). 2016: Selected for the 9th Contemporary Tea Ceramics Exhibition (selected 5 times thereafter) Currently a full member of the Japan Crafts Association. □ Yoshiyuki Hirose Born in Tochigi Prefecture in 1954. 1980: Graduated from the Department of Crafts, Faculty of Fine Arts, Tokyo University of the Arts. 1982: Completed graduate studies in Ceramics at Tokyo University of the Arts. 1984: After serving as a research student at the same university, became a part-time research assistant (until 1985). 1986: Studied under Professor Yoshimichi Fujimoto. 1994: Solo exhibition at Nihonbashi Takashimaya (12 times) 1998: Exhibited at the "Ippin-kai" (four times) at Nihonbashi Mitsukoshi. Japan Foundation purchases artwork 2002 Ome City works purchased 2008: Selected for the 3rd Kikuchi Biennale Exhibition (Kikuchi Kanji Memorial Museum of Chishin, Tokyo) Currently a full member of the Japan Crafts Association. |
