Introduction
Introduction

I visited Mr. Setsu in Kyoto on the last day of June, amidst a torrential downpour that felt like someone had overturned a bucket of water.

His workshop is located in Yamashina, and it's a mere 15-minute drive east from Kyoto Station. I was amazed to find myself in such a picturesque location.

It was great to see Ms. Setsu again after so long, and we had a wonderful time chatting about her new work, Kyoto, the tea ceremony, and many other things.

The appeal of these works lies in the beautiful and mysterious scenery created by the suminagashi (marbling) technique, which is applied to the sides of tea bowls, flower vases, sake vessels, and other items.

The shape is not achieved by wheel-throwing, but by the tatara method, where flattened clay sheets are glued together. The late Haruzo Hayashiya's description of Setsu tea bowls as "modern Oribe" resonates deeply with me.

Now, for this exhibition, which is the third at our gallery, we have given it the subtitle "Bewitching Beauty."

While she had previously painted suminagashi (marbling) designs on crisp black and white backgrounds, in this exhibition she has added suminagashi to a brown background reminiscent of Bizen ware, truly opening up a mysterious new frontier.

Ms. Setsu is diligently working on her pottery.

I hope you will enjoy looking at it.
