最近、若手の金工作家の作品が面白い。 何故だろうと考えるのだが、うまい答えが見つからない。 もしかすると、陶芸や漆芸のような概念が確立していないから、技術的にも造形的にも自由なのかも知れない。いま注目されている金工作家・釋永 維の作品を眺めていると、技術や造形もさることながら、新しい感覚の誕生を感じる。
釋永は、伝統ある越中瀬戸の窯元の家に生まれたが、父や姉兄が陶芸を志す中、「家の前の土置き場で長年剥き出しになった建物の鉄骨が自然の中で腐食していく様(さま)に関心を持った。 また、陶器と共に食卓のアンティークの匙や銅鍋の美しさに魅了されてきた」と語る。
大学卒業後は、ジュエラーの「MIKIMOTO」に就職、在職の九年間に金工のあらゆる技術を習得した。 釋永作品の技術の確かさは、その時に培われたものであろう。
今展には、銅や錫などの素材に大小様々な穴を開けたオブジェや茶器、円環蓋置、小皿なども出品される。 「鼓動」と題された壁面立体は、部分的に錫を焼き付け、硫化着色で茶色目に仕上げた新作だが、完成度の高い魅力的な作品である。 この作家は、金属の持つ強靭さと朽ち果てていく脆さの両極を受け入れながら、新たな技術の習得によって、さらに発展を成し遂げてゆくであろうと期待している。
