A message regarding the "Chieko Tokigami Exhibition"
The first exhibition at Kakiden Gallery will be held for Munemi Yorigami, who studied under Kazuo Yagi, a leading figure in the avant-garde ceramic group "Sodeisha," and his wife, Chieko, who studied under Junji Kumakura, also a member of "Sodeisha" and a pioneer of avant-garde ceramics.
Munemi will be exhibiting a range of innovative works, primarily focusing on new pieces that combine ceramic and wooden forms, as part of her previous "RE-CREATIONS" project, which involves creating, destroying, firing, and reassembling ceramics. These include celadon objects and vessels made at the Longquan kiln in Zhejiang Province, China, as well as water pitchers and Raku tea ware created using hand-molding and slab-building techniques.
Chieko will be exhibiting jars, pouring vessels, water pitchers, incense burners, lidded containers, and teapots, all featuring incised lines, dots, and scale patterns on the surface of black clay, further adorned with silver, gold and silver, and gold and red glazes. Chieko's work with black clay involves slowly building up the clay by hand, about 2-3 cm at a time each day. She does not trim the clay at all, cherishing the tension created when twisting it, and finishes the beautiful form solely through hand-molding.
