On a mild, sunny afternoon, for some reason I felt like James Bond from "Goldfinger," and with a grim expression, I got into my Aston Martin DB5 (actually a Nissan van) and pressed the gas pedal, heading straight for Furka Pass in the Alps (actually Kamakura). My destination was to visit Akiko Tomikawa , who continues to diligently create pottery in Kamakura.
Ms. Tomikawa is a female ceramic artist who has made a name for herself with her works featuring a pale blue color, which she calls "ice blue glaze." Lately, they've been using ice as a motif, and I think the deep, ice-like blue glaze is absolutely beautiful. The latest lidded container, which won an award at the recent East Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition, also has a wonderful knob that resembles an iceberg. I think the most important thing about lidded dishes is the dipping sauce.
Now, for this exhibition, her first solo show at our gallery, she has taken on a challenge of collaborating with music, and has created new works based on my favorite songs. The teacup on the reverse side is said to be inspired by Pharrell Williams' 2013 hit song "Happy," and the gently dancing shape of the rim is so fun that it makes you want to hum "Happy♪". In addition, we will be presenting 70 new works, mainly featuring ice-blue glaze, including tea bowls, water pitchers, vases, and sake vessels. We apologize for the hot weather, but we would be delighted if you could come and cool off at our gallery.
Just imagining Bond sipping a crisp, chilled dry martini from the ice-blue cup on the back of the bottle is enough to make me excited. And of course, it would be "shaken and not stirred."

| Biography Biography | Born in 1977 in Kamakura City, Kanagawa Prefecture. 2002 Completed Graduate School of Fine Arts, Joshibi University of Art and Design Completed the Molding and Glazing course at the Ibaraki Prefectural Ceramics Training Center in 2007. Selected for the 59th Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition in 2012. Selected for the 5th Kikuchi Biennale and the 22nd Japan Ceramics Exhibition in 2013. 2014 Contemporary Ceramics Hagi Grand Prize Exhibition (3) Iwakuni Art Museum Award 2017 10th Contemporary Tea Ceremony Pottery Exhibition TOKI Oribe Encouragement Award 2019 59th East Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition MOA Museum of Art Award Currently a full member of the Japan Crafts Association. |
