On a cold December day as the year 1991 drew to a close, I flew to Suzu. Suzu is located at the northernmost tip of the Noto Peninsula and is an ancient kiln where pots and jars have been fired since the Heian period. It is said that at the time it boasted the highest production volume on the Sea of Japan side, but for some reason it suddenly disappeared at the end of the 15th century and was considered a legendary, almost mythical, ancient pottery.
It was Tatsuma Nakayama, featured in this exhibition, who revived Suzu ware 40 years ago. Apparently, there are now 18 pottery studios in Suzu, and the tradition has been wonderfully revived in modern times. Modern Suzu ware is defined as ① produced in Suzu, ② using Suzu clay, and ③ fired in a reduction atmosphere, resulting in a black color. I believe that the simple, dark gray unglazed stoneware of Suzu exudes a unique charm that sets it apart from other pottery-producing regions.
Now, in this exhibition, we would like to introduce you to three artists of Suzu ware, a genre our gallery has never featured before. Mr. Nakayama, a key figure in the 40th anniversary of the reconstruction; Ms. Shinohara, who deeply loves her hometown; and Ms. Yamada, a young female writer. Suzu ware continues to weave a new history into the Reiwa era. I would be grateful if you would take a look at it.

| Biography Biography | ■Takashi Shinohara Born in 1960 in Suzu City, Ishikawa Prefecture. In 1995, he established the Yuge Kiln and became an independent Suzu ware artist. Certified as a Traditional Craftsman of Ishikawa Prefecture in 2012. ■Tatsuma Nakayama Born in Kanazawa City, Ishikawa Prefecture in 1952. 1982: Suzu Iizuka Kiln opened. In 2013, received the Ishikawa Prefecture Award for Outstanding Technician and Meritorious Service in Traditional Industries. ■Mutsumi Yamada Born in Suzu City, Ishikawa Prefecture in 1976. 2004: Started making Suzu ware. 2012: Selected for "Contemporary Tea Ceremony - Forms of Utility" (Kikuchi Kanmi Memorial Chishin Museum/Tokyo) |
