On a cold day in January, I headed to Tanba. In the pouring rain, with the windshield wipers working frantically, I finally made it to Iyo Oogami 's workshop. Despite being late, Iyo greeted me with a big smile. It was a heartwarming moment during my trip, and I'm truly grateful for it.
I first met her three years ago at a group exhibition of Tamba ware at our gallery. I still remember being amazed at how lifelike the lions and demons in the artwork looked, wondering if they were actually made of pottery. I really liked the way it presented mythical and mysterious auspicious symbols and yokai—strange and bizarre things from ancient Japan—in a cute and lighthearted way.
Now, for her first solo exhibition at our gallery, titled "Monster Ceramics Exhibition," we will be presenting her signature style: eerie yet adorable monsters. The artwork on the far right in the photo above is a sake bottle, but since drinking alone would be lonely, a third angel is holding the red sake bottle for it. If such a cute angel were to pour you fine wine, you would surely enjoy the drink even more, and time would seem to pass by slowly.
Ms. Ogami is also diligently practicing the Urasenke style of tea ceremony, and will be holding a "Rikka Tea Ceremony" at Kakiden on Saturday, May 11th. We would be delighted if you could also attend this event.

| Biography Biography | Born in 1987 in Tamba-Tachikui, Hyogo Prefecture. Graduated from Kyoto City University of Arts, Ceramics Department in 2010. Studied under ceramic artist Morimi Saeki (Tochigi Prefecture) In 2011, I began making pottery at the Okuma Kiln in Tamba. 2015: Selected for the Kobe Biennale 2015 Contemporary Ceramics Competition. 2016: Ongoing - Women's Ceramics II (Ibaraki Prefectural Museum of Ceramics) |
