In tribute to Hagi Denryu II - From its beginnings -
When people hear the name "Hagi pottery" or "Hagi ware," many probably imagine "tea ceremony" or "tea ceramics." As exemplified by the high regard for Hagi ware tea bowls, exemplified by the saying "First Raku, second Hagi, third Karatsu," Hagi ware, which originated about 400 years ago as the official kiln of the Hagi domain during the Edo period, has cultivated the brand of "Hagi" tea ceramics over its long history, with kilns built in what is now Hagi City and Nagato City in Yamaguchi Prefecture.
The exhibition to be held this timeYasushi Okada , Yuuta Saka , Masahiro Sakakura , Akihiro Shinjou , Takao Tahara , Shin'ichi TamamuraThe six writersteethBoth were born into families in Hagi and Nagato who made a living from pottery, and grew up in an environment where they were constantly exposed to the traditions and classical arts of Hagi. While being mindful of that tradition, these artists are striving to build a new tradition for Hagi, cherishing their individuality and aiming to express and create their own unique style through pottery. This is also the subtitle of this exhibition.plagiarism(Ranshou). This word, derived from the Confucian concept of ancient China, means "the origin" or "beginning" of things, and it truly reflects their determination to create a new trend in Hagi ware while inheriting the tradition of Hagi pottery.
They all share a common approach of using Hagi clay as a material, and while they are committed to this, their methods of expression are unique to each of the six artists. These works utilize the softness and texture of Hagi clay, incorporate glaze colors not originally found in Hagi ware, and employ various other techniques, including expressions not limited to the use of vessels. Furthermore, each of them has dedicated themselves to the art of the tea ceremony, reflecting on its essence and contemplating the role of Hagi ware, a type of pottery used in tea ceremonies.
This exhibition brings together the six of us for the first time in a year. While we hope that you will be able to find the individuality of each artist in their works, we also hope that you will enjoy this new form of Hagi ware through your dialogue with the pieces.
