| Introduction Introduction |
In honor of the zodiac animal for the new year, I created a brocade design featuring wisteria, rising waves, and a boar motif. This tapestry depicts a mother wild boar and her piglets running freely through the spring fields and mountains where wisteria is in bloom. Because baby wild boars have a pattern resembling a striped melon, they are called "uribo" (wild boar piglets), and a pattern consisting of boar's eyes (heart-shaped patterns) is placed between these uribo. Because wild boars are very wary and tend to run away immediately when they see something unfamiliar, their motifs have been given the meaning of warding off evil spirits and have been frequently used in decorative metalwork at shrines and temples. On the other hand, the weeping wisteria blossoms symbolize abundance, and the vitality of its vine-like leaves represents longevity and good health. Because wisteria sounds similar to Mount Fuji, a sacred mountain that symbolizes Japan, it has been loved by the Japanese people and has been featured in numerous poems in the Manyoshu anthology. Furthermore, a design featuring wisteria leaves and flowers arranged within a wave-like pattern is called Fujitachiwaku, and this motif was favored by the aristocracy during the Heian period. It still exists today as fabric for the cover of a 12th-century picture scroll. We hope you will enjoy viewing this and wish us a prosperous New Year.
