The Koishiwara ware pottery that Mr. Onimaru creates in Fukuoka has a history that dates back to 1682 when potters from Imari were invited to the area. It is located about an hour's drive from Hakata, heading southeast (not north-northwest). Unfortunately, last year's torrential rains in northern Kyushu swept away Mr. Onimaru's workshop, and many of his works and tools were lost. This is truly a tragic event, and I offer my deepest condolences. Among the many Koishiwara ware kilns, Mr. Onimaru stands out as a brilliant up-and-coming ceramic artist who sets himself apart from traditional Koishiwara ware by diligently creating modern celadon porcelain pieces. The first time I saw his work was a celadon water container that was selected for the "Contemporary Tea Ceremony" open call exhibition at the Chishin Museum of Art. I remember thinking how cool and interesting it would be to use it as a flat water container in the summer. Since then, he has primarily exhibited works of celadon porcelain, and as pottery enthusiasts know, he has repeatedly won awards at various open exhibitions. This will be my first solo exhibition at our gallery, and I will be presenting 70 of my latest works to the world. | Biography Biography | Takayuki Onimaru Born in 1977 in Koishiwara Village, Asakura District, Fukuoka Prefecture (present-day Toho Village). Completed Master's Program in Ceramics, Graduate School of Fine Arts, Tokyo University of the Arts in 2005. In 2008, he published his doctoral dissertation, "A Study on the Production of Celadon Porcelain Utilizing Engravings," at the same university and received his doctorate. Selected for the 4th Kikuchi Biennale in 2010 (Kikuchi Kanji Memorial Chishin Museum, Tokyo) 2011: Selected for "Contemporary Tea Ceremony - Function and Form" (Kikuchi Kanjitsu Memorial Chishin Museum, Tokyo) 2012: 47th Western Japan Crafts Exhibition, Japan Crafts Association Award; 29th West Japan Ceramic Art Exhibition, Grand Prize 2014: Celadon faceted square plate "Mukai" purchased by the Imperial Household Agency. 2017 Japan Ceramics Exhibition: Excellent Work Award, Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Award |
