| Introduction Introduction |
Izuru Yamamoto studied sculpture at Musashino Art University and learned pottery techniques from her father, Toshihide Yamamoto (a Living National Treasure). However, what he aimed for was a truly authentic sculptural work that integrated form and decoration, something not found in traditional Bizen ware.
Therefore, he established unique techniques such as "Shusai," which involves using colored clay made by mixing pigments with Bizen clay and pounding it into the shape, and "Tsumiage," which involves mixing Bizen clay with clay from Burgundy, France, forming thin sheets of clay and stacking them in multiple layers.
The goal was to create works that were fresh, unique, and appealing to the modern age, while preserving the aesthetic sensibilities of Bizen pottery.
Art critic Yoshiaki Inui highly praises Yamamoto's work, describing it as "a new, sculptural work that connects to Jomon pottery."
This exhibition will feature over 20 of Yamamoto's impressive "Stacked" and "Splendid" style vases, as well as a variety of colorful tableware and vases from " Izuru Seitou " a brand founded by his son to carry on his father's techniques and share their appeal with a wider audience, all suited to modern lifestyles.
