I first met Ken Matsubara nine years ago. This was the preparation room at Kakiden during the "Tea Ceremony Club Tea Gathering" held in honor of Mr. Haruzo Hayashiya, who sadly passed away last April. Since then, Professor Hayashiya and Ken have developed a close relationship, and I have also become close to them in return.
Up until now, our gallery has presented abstract paintings related to his creative theme of "sound," as well as the "Mount Fuji painting" commissioned by Mr. Hayashiya. This exhibition, the first in two years, will feature "Scenery," an abstract painting I have been working on in recent years, and my latest work, "Waterscape." "景" expresses the dynamism of the pictographic forms created by water, while "水景" expresses the resonance of the atmosphere that appears on the surface of the lake water. I believe the charm of Ken's works lies in the subtle "stillness" that permeates them. The works, painted with a confident brushstroke, possess both strength and transience, and I believe this resulting sense of weightlessness is what I perceive as "stillness."
To coincide with this exhibition, Ken will also be hosting a tea ceremony, his first time serving as the host. At this tea ceremony, I will unveil for the first time the screen painting of Kukai that I recently finished. I also saw this image, and I was deeply moved by its overwhelming impact. Furthermore, Ken has compiled his experiences assisting at tea ceremonies, which began with his encounter with Professor Hayashiya, into a book titled "From the Tea Ceremony 2010-2017." I would be grateful if you would take a look at this as well.
