Introduction
Introduction

My first encounter with Itsuro Ishii's work was several years ago at Ristorante Hamasaki, a renowned Italian restaurant in Aoyama, Tokyo.

Ms. Hamasaki's cooking was absolutely delicious, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. But beyond the food itself, the tableware she used was also beautiful and exquisite. Ishii's work is the kind of beautiful tableware that doesn't detract from the food, but rather enhances it.

Ms. Ishii, who also runs a porcelain painting class in a prime location in Aoyama, is a leading figure in porcelain painting in Japan, where she hand-paints flowers and plants onto fired porcelain with a confident brushstroke.

Porcelain refers to ceramics, and it includes not only European white porcelain such as Royal Copenhagen, but also beautiful overglaze decorations on the tableware of the Inoue Manji kiln in Arita.

Furthermore, in recent years, his work has been applied to pottery from Kasama and Karatsu, opening up new horizons with the soft texture of the ceramics and his beautiful brushwork.

The brushstrokes possess both strength and transience, and are so beautiful that they can only be described as magnificent.

He dedicates himself to exploring colors every day, and he says, "Everyday tableware isn't just for decoration; it's meant to be enjoyed by serving food on it. I believe that culture is about beautifully coloring our lives, including our food." I strongly agree with his sentiment.

Ms. Ishii, who travels back and forth between Japan and Copenhagen, Denmark, has a strong opinion on Nordic culture.

This will be our gallery's first exhibition of overglaze enamel painting, and it is sure to make the venue more vibrant than ever before. We would be delighted if you could come and see it.
