Sophisticated style Ichirou Katou learned the technique of applying colored paint to a cloth-like surface from Motohiko Itou , and since around 2004, he has been attracting attention for his unique works. He is now a prominent mid-career artist and full member of the Japan Crafts Association. I have long admired his work, and have used his confectionery containers and flower vases in tea ceremonies held by my tea ceremony enthusiasts' club. Now, his style has become more diverse, and his decorations have become more refined. In particular, his tea bowls possess elegance in their form and design, and are sure to captivate many people as contemporary tea bowls. | Biography Biography | Born in Yamaguchi Prefecture in 1972. Graduated from Kyoto Junior College of Art in 1992 (Heisei 4). Completed training at the Ibaraki Prefectural Ceramics Training Center in 1995, and studied under Motohiko Itou 1999: Received the Governor's Award at the Ceramics Foundation Exhibition. 2002: Received the Excellence Award at the Ibaraki Prefecture Art Festival Art Exhibition. Selected for the Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition; subsequently selected 8 times. 2004: Received the Mitsukoshi Award at the Traditional Crafts New Works Exhibition, and the Encouragement Award at the Asahi Ceramics Exhibition. 2006: Received the Japan Crafts Association Award at the New Ceramics Exhibition. 2007: Received the Hokkaido Governor's Award at the Otaki Hokkaido Ceramics Exhibition. 2008: Received the Grand Prize and the Hokkaido Governor's Award at the Otaki Hokkaido Ceramics Exhibition.
