| Introduction Introduction |
It was two years ago that I received an offer from my esteemed Fumio Matsutani to participate in a four-person exhibition with "tea bowls" as the common theme. The four young potters active in Shikoku and Tanba were up-and-coming artists who had been well-supported by our gallery, and above all, I loved their work, so I remember as if it were yesterday when I readily accepted their request.
Now, the title of this exhibition is"Shisoshi Pottery"To that end, we will present our latest work, which embodies the aspirations of four people who aspire to become ceramic artists.
Fumio Matsutani creates pottery in Tobe, Ehime Prefecture, and his "Reiki" pottery, characterized by its unique texture with countless reddish-brown streaks and flowing forms, has repeatedly won awards and been selected for public exhibitions in recent years.
Nobuo Nishida has a kiln near Kochi Airport, and his "Ao" series, featuring vibrant blue and ink-black patterns on white porcelain, is very popular. However, recently he has been experimenting with new works that are entirely white, incorporating carved patterns into the white porcelain. Could this change be influenced by his recent dedication to tea ceremony practice?
Nobuhito Nakaoka is based in Tanba, Hyogo Prefecture, and creates works with a beautiful blue glaze. From small pieces to large works, his unique presence is instantly recognizable as Nakaoka's work and exudes a captivating charm.
Takeshi Shimizu also has a kiln in Tanba and has mainly produced works in a deep ultramarine blue color, but for this exhibition he has sent us a wonderful tea bowl that is different in style from his previous works.
During the exhibition, we will also be offering tea ceremonies using tea utensils made by the four artists. During this time in November, we would be grateful if you would feel free to offer your strict guidance to our young potter.
