The Hironaga kiln originated in 1946 when Kawakita Handeishi moved his climbing kiln from his home on Chitoseyama in Tsu City to its current location in a tranquil setting on the shores of Kanrin Pond at the foot of Haseyama Mountain. Within the kiln site is a clay Buddha hall built by Han-deishi when he was 80 years old, and a statue he created himself, located at the front of the 10-tatami mat room, welcomes visitors.
Along with his self-made statue, guests are greeted by large inscriptions on both sides of the shrine doors. These are humorous phrases like "How are you?" and "Come again!"
This is the first exhibition for the four of us at Kakiden Gallery. Based on Han-dei's free spirit, unbound by conventions or rules, we aim to create pottery that gently soothes the hearts of those who hold it. We hope you enjoy it.

—About Han-deishi Hironaga Kiln—
Kawakita Handeiko was the 16th head of the Kawakita Kyutayu family, one of the most prominent merchant families in Ise. He was the owner of a cotton wholesale business, the president of Hyakugo Bank, and held important positions in numerous companies. Despite his busy life, he pursued a variety of hobbies, including calligraphy, painting, tea ceremony, haiku, photography, and architecture, enjoying himself with an unconventional and free attitude. In particular, his pottery, which he began seriously after the age of 50, was exceptional. Han-deishi's art, which has been called "the Rosanjin of the East, the Han-deishi of the West" and "the Koetsu of the Showa era," has captivated many people, and the legacy he left in modern pottery has attracted attention beyond the realm of a hobby.
After Kawakita Handeishi passed away in 1963, Tsuboshima Tohei, who had witnessed Handeishi's pottery making firsthand since the kiln's inception, took over, and his works also captured the hearts of many pottery enthusiasts. His pottery was highly praised by renowned chefs, which helped develop Hironaga Kiln from a hobby into a business.
After Tsuchihira Tsuboshima passed away in 2013, the tradition of Hironaga Kiln was inherited by ceramic artists Masato Shimoda and Shuji Fujimura. Later, two more ceramic artists (Tsukasa Fukumori and Hisashi Sakaguchi), who had trained at other kilns, joined the kiln, bringing it to the present day.

| Biography Biography | ■ Masato Shimoda Born in 1953 in Yokkaichi City, Mie Prefecture. 1969: Studied under Tsuboshima Dohei at Hironaga Kiln. The "Hironaga Kiln Family Exhibition" will be held at Tachikichi (Kyoto, Ginza), Nihonbashi Takashimaya (Special Salon), Kakiden Gallery, and other venues. ■Hajime Fukumori Born in Tsu City, Mie Prefecture in 1961. In 1985, inherited the Akogi ware pottery kiln. 1998: Exhibited at the 36th Asahi Ceramic Art Exhibition 1999: Exhibited at the 6th Biennale. ■Hisashi Sakaguchi Born in 1950 in Taki-cho, Taki-gun, Mie Prefecture. 1970: Graduated from Seto Ceramics Training School in Aichi Prefecture, and became an apprentice to Mitsuaki Kato. 1974: Trained at "Kagura no Kama" in Ise City, Mie Prefecture. 1983: Kiln opened in Taki Town. Since then, solo exhibitions have been held at Tobu Department Store (Tokyo), Honen-in Temple (Kyoto), Banri-ki (Yokohama), Toen (Matsuyama), Anzu-sha (Nara), Yamabito (Toyohashi), Danrantei (Ise), and others. ■Teijo Sugita Born in 1954 in Toba City, Mie Prefecture. 1977: Graduated from Tokyo Institute of Crafts and studied under Tsuboshima Dohei of Hironaga Kiln. In 1983, I opened the "Tei Kiln" in Toba City. Since then, solo exhibitions have been held at Maruei Department Store (Nagoya), Kintetsu Department Store (Yokkaichi), Gallery Kobuharu (Kyoto), and other venues. |
