It was last year that I encountered Shinya Sakurai's work in a gallery located in a corner of a row of stately old buildings along the tree-lined Nihon-Odori in Yokohama. The artwork presented at that time left a very pleasant and strong impression on me, thanks to its rhythmic use of blue as the dominant color. I went to this solo exhibition because it was recommended to me by lacquer artist Iwao Ikeda.
Sakurai was born in Fukuyama City, Hiroshima Prefecture, and after studying at Osaka University of Arts and the Turin Academy of Fine Arts in Italy, he is a young abstract painter who currently has a studio in Turin, a city in northern Italy. As a car enthusiast, the name Fiat immediately comes to mind when I think of Turin. (Turin is located about 150 kilometers west of Milan, a major city in northern Italy.)
Sakurai chose to base himself in Turin rather than Milan, where there are many Japanese artists, because he disliked the reliance on his compatriots and wanted to dedicate himself to his work in solitude. I think that his work clearly reflects that rigor and clarity. The colors are bright and transparent, with an Italian crispness and rhythm that makes you feel cheerful just by looking at it. The unique texture, achieved by blending oil paints with acrylics, gives the paintings an impactful, almost repelling quality, yet depending on the light, they reveal a moist, supple texture.
I had been thinking that Sakurai's work might blend in well with the soft light of a tea room. Coincidentally, Mr. Iwao Ikeda mentioned that Mr. Sakurai had long expressed a desire to hold a solo exhibition at our gallery, which was a pleasant surprise.
As mentioned earlier, Iwao Ikeda is a lacquer artist whom I deeply respect, and he continues to create highly original and vibrant works using bamboo as his material, based on the themes of the life of bamboo and the energy of lacquer.
Although the two are 40 years apart in age, their creative drive is equally strong, and Mr. Iwao Ikeda will be hosting a tea ceremony featuring both of their works during the exhibition period, which will surely double the enjoyment.
As an aside, my late father, Zenichi, and Mr. Hyōa Ikeda, the father of Professor Iwao, were old acquaintances, and I feel a deep connection to them as they were both born in 1914 (Taisho 3).
