Introduction
Introduction

Toshiya Shimozawa is a leading ceramic artist from Hokkaido.

He received the Hokkaido Cultural Encouragement Award in 2011.

Their activities extend beyond Japan, encompassing South Korea, China, and New York.

Shimosawa's works attempt to uncover the memory of life from within the magnificent flow of time in the northern lands.

One of his representative works, Re-birth, includes the passage of time, from decaying to rebirth.<風化から再生へ>I am creating this piece with that theme in mind.

Meanwhile, Shimosawa is also experimenting with making tableware such as tea bowls and ceramic boxes.

He is particularly drawn to Oribe ware, which is known for its freedom and rich artistic expression.

The reason is that Oribe ware was created as tableware for kaiseki cuisine.

This exhibition also features ceramic boxes in the Oribe and Kohiki styles, as well as tea bowls with crackle patterns, and one can feel the blessings of the northern land in every piece.

This is likely because Shimosawa is committed to using clay from the northern lands, breathing life into his pottery.

In other words, Shimosawa's pottery originates from the northern lands.
