| Introduction Introduction |
In recent years, Tetsu Suzuki has been creating pottery in which he finds the color green particularly beautiful. The translucent yet striking hue makes it feel almost an understatement to simply call it green. That green color is called "green glaze" in pottery terminology. Toru has continued making pottery with a focus on this green glaze. Sometimes he draws comb-like patterns with material made from broken plywood, and sometimes he applies muddy clay to decorate the surface of the vessel before applying the green glaze. Lately, sharp, bamboo-joint-like rims run around the body of his vessels. All of this stems from his desire to "create pottery with a green glaze that has never been seen before" and from his efforts to make the green color look even more beautiful. Furthermore, Toru utilizes the expressive techniques he cultivated with green glaze in his work with ash glaze, brown glaze, and indigo glaze as well. His works convey a sincere attitude and enthusiasm, showing his unwavering dedication to discovering his own unique style. This time too, the focus is on green glaze, and you can expect to see works that incorporate various ingenious techniques based on this glaze. I hope you will come to the venue and see its beauty for yourself. Masahiro Karasawa (Head of the Crafts Department, The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo) |
