Introduction
Introduction

When Roland Barthes' paintings arrived in Japan in 1985, fearing that these precious watercolors by the philosopher would be scattered, 46 volunteers came together to form the Bright Room Society and decided to share and preserve this collection of works.

This method of collecting works of art is unprecedented in the world.

To confirm that "The Bright Room" is a shared space, each participant brings their artwork together for a public exhibition every two years, and through a lottery, they receive their own artwork for the following two years.

This exhibition for the lottery will provide an opportunity to widely showcase Roland Barthes' paintings to the public, making it a valuable chance for the general public to become familiar with this unique philosopher's open way of thinking and his artistic sensibility.

Initiators (at the time of its founding in 1985): Akira Asada, Katsumi Asaba, Shinichi Nakazawa
