| Introduction Introduction |
What comes to mind when you think of Toyama? Yellowtail in winter, white shrimp, black ramen, Owara Kaze no Bon festival, medicine vendors, the world's most beautiful Starbucks Coffee...
When I think of Toyama, the first thing that comes to mind is the Tateyama mountain range, which I love. At the foot of Mount Tateyama, a magnificent peak that Toyama is proud of, we will be holding an exhibition by the Kanakurekai, a group of five potters who create Etchu Seto ware, with their kilns billowing with smoke. When people think of crafts in Toyama Prefecture, glass and metalwork might come to mind, but actually, pottery is also something that's doing very well.
Etchu Seto ware is an ancient kiln with a 430-year history. Potters moved from Owari Seto, and the name Etchu Seto ware is said to have originated from a directive from the Maeda family of Kaga to "find good clay in Etchu and start making Seto ware." Also, "kanakure" is apparently a local dialect word for pottery shards, and I thought it was a very nice name that reflects the efforts of those who came before us.
I think that many people from Toyama are kind and gentle, and the works of the Kanakurekai group have a gentle texture that reflects that personality, and they feel wonderfully comfortable in the palm of your hand. This is our gallery's first ever Kanakurekai (art exhibition). We would be grateful for any feedback you may have.
