Greetings The exhibition "Karatsu Today 2010: A Competition of Skills by Twelve Potters," featuring works by twelve mid-career and up-and-coming ceramic artists from Karatsu, will be held at the Kakiden Gallery. This exhibition is the first of its kind by popular local artists to showcase the current state of Karatsu ware, which is highly regarded among ceramic enthusiasts.
Karatsu ware is said to be one of the three most beloved tea bowls by tea masters since ancient times, and its greatest appeal lies in its unpretentious generosity and the texture of the clay. It is truly born from the clay and climate of Karatsu, and its form is made specifically for enjoying a cup of tea. There is a wide variety of types, including Okukorai, E-Karatsu, Chosen-Karatsu, Hori-Karatsu, Madara-Karatsu, Kuro-Karatsu, Seto-Karatsu, Hakeme-Karatsu, and Mishima-Karatsu. The twelve artists exhibiting in this exhibition are pursuing the charm of these ancient Karatsu wares with their own sensibilities, and challenging themselves to create a modern Karatsu that is different from the classical style.
岡本作礼氏は、黒高麗に人気の作家。素材である陶土と真剣に向き合い、過去にはない今日の唐津の造形に挑戦されています。
梶原靖元氏は、デザイン出身の作家だけに作品のもつフォルムが魅力的。古唐津再現の体験を踏まえて自分なりの唐津を探求されています。
川上清美氏は対馬出身の陶芸家。伝世品の写しを基本としながらも、唐津の本質に迫る繊細で独特な個性の器を作られています。
田中佐次郎氏の豪快な唐津は、その人の魅力でもあります。唐津のルーツを訪ねて韓国にも築窯、二つの国で焼かれる作品は、佐次郎氏の人生を表して独創的です。
中川自然坊氏の作る茶碗には凛とした風格があります。その趣が最近とみに深みをましてきたような気がします。
中里太亀氏は父・隆氏より一日五百枚の皿を挽くことから教わりました。基本のしっかりしたその作品からは、温かな人柄が感じられます。
十四代中里太郎右衛門氏は、唐津の名門窯元に生まれながら、じつは磁州窯が大好き。いまでは、その磁州窯も唐津焼の一つの表現となり、新しい唐津が誕生しました。
濱崎節生氏は固定概念に囚われない自由な発想の造形作家。その彼が作る陶人形には、不思議な雰囲気が漂っています。
浜本洋好氏は斑唐津に魅せられ、その素晴らしさを表現するための本物の土と釉と焼き(割竹式連房登り窯)にこだわって作陶されています。
藤ノ木土平氏の作品からは、気負いのないやさしさが感じられます。おもちゃ箱という作品は、そうした土平氏の遊び心から生まれたもので、造形もさることながら焼きが魅力的です。
丸田宗彦氏は、絵唐津に定評のある作家。その大らかな作風は古唐津の特徴とうまく合致して、愛陶家には強い人気です。
吉野靖義氏は伊万里市南波多町高瀬櫨ノ谷で作陶する作家。古唐津のもつ風合いに近づくため、新素材の〈砂石〉に一途に挑戦されています。
