Brocade, gold brocade, satin, gauze, twill, Chinese braided fabric...
Ms. Nakajima is the creator of these classical textiles (patterned textiles made from silk). In Ms. Nakajima's home and workshop, located in a quiet residential area of Nakano Ward, Tokyo, there is a very large loom, and she dedicates every spare moment to her work.
In restoring this classical textile, she single-handedly handles every step of the process, from researching the raw materials—cocoons and silkworms—to dyeing the yarn with natural dyes and weaving the fabric. Apparently, the silk spun by silkworms has different thicknesses at the beginning and end of the spinning process, and this unevenness in the reeling process gives the fabric a simple and natural texture.
Now, for her first solo exhibition at our gallery, titled "Appreciating Textiles," Ms. Nakajima has meticulously woven a beautiful and auspicious pattern, "Pine and Wave Crane and Turtle Brocade," which is perfect for the New Year. We will be exhibiting over 100 items, including various pouches, silk cloths, fabrics, and framed artworks. This exhibition marks the beginning of the 29th year of the Heisei era (Year of the Fire Rooster), and we would be grateful for your feedback.

| Biography Biography | Born in Chichibu City, Saitama Prefecture in 1955. Graduated from Tama Art University, Department of Design, Textile Design Major in 1978. 1986: Around this time, I began working on the production of classical textiles used in the restoration of cultural properties. We have worked on 115 cultural properties, of which 20 are National Treasures or Important Cultural Properties. 2006 Pola Award for Traditional Culture, Encouragement Prize 2007: Recipient of the Kimono Culture Award for Meritorious Service in Traditional Costume Culture 2009 S&R Foundation Washington Special Award |
