| Introduction Introduction |
Kiyoyuki Katou refuses to compromise in order to create a form that satisfies him and to carve lines that he finds satisfying. This is because, as a creator, I detest anything unnatural, and I know that the only way to become one with nature is through the act of creation. I don't know any other potter who is as knowledgeable about Old Seto ware as Mr. Kato. Born from such accumulated experience, the ash-glazed tea bowl may be the only tea bowl that allows you to enjoy tea without pandering to its essence. On the other hand, the black clay and white glazed tea bowl is a modern tea bowl created by Mr. Kato's robust sculpting ability and refined sensibility. At first glance, it seems to be the opposite of the traditional ash-glazed tea bowl, but what these two have in common is a sense of cleanliness that could be called the artist's way of being, and a poetic sentiment that arises from a profound sensibility.
