  1. On a chilly April day, I visited the workshop "Shōraku Kiln" of Yukio Shakusawa in Tateyama, Toyama Prefecture.

    Mr. and Mrs. Yukio, their second daughter Yui (a metalwork artist), and their golden retriever dog Buntaro all gave us a warm welcome.

    Yukio's workshop is located in Tateyama Town, about a 30-minute drive from Toyama Station, which is bustling with activity on the Hokuriku Shinkansen.

    Behind the workshop, the Tateyama mountain range loomed majestically, and the sight of Tateyama, still covered in snow, was magnificent and beautiful, completely captivating me.

    Now, for our gallery's first exhibition in two years, titled "Forms in Black and White," we will be presenting a variety of new works, large and small, using high-quality white clay sourced from Tateyama and employing white and black glazes.

    Yukio-san has established an organization called "Kanakure-kai" with potters from the neighboring Etchu Seto ware region, and regularly organizes events such as tea ceremonies to liven up the local area. After this Golden Week, he has also planned to fire up all the kilns simultaneously with wood-fired kilns. That's wonderful.

    Shaku Nagai's works are captivating with their warm, gentle texture and beautiful form. We invite you to view them.

Biography
Biography		Born in 1954 in Tateyama Town, Toyama Prefecture, into a family of Etchu Seto ware potters.
In 1975, he received instruction from Professor Seizo Hayashiya and became a student of Professor Sozan Kaneshige.
1982: Began exploring ancient kiln sites in Korea.
　　　　　 From then on, he produced pottery in Icheon, Cheongju, and Mungyeong.
In 1996, I met Steve Jobs and subsequently received production requests from him.
2014: Exhibited artwork in New York.
Exhibited artwork at the 2015 Milan Expo.
