| Introduction Introduction |
Yoshihiko Murata 's lacquerware is lustrous, warm, and somehow gentle. This is because the artist's feelings blend with the lacquer tree sap, gently enveloping the artwork. Many of Murata's works are made from maple wood. Maple is a heavy and hard wood, making it somewhat difficult to carve with cutting tools, but the reason for using maple is its toughness and resilience. Murata has worked with various types of wood, but says, "Maple is the most suitable wood for expressing the supple lines that nature possesses." Murata creates works inspired by nature out of respect for the natural world, but he says, "I always try to maintain a humble attitude and keep in mind not to over-express myself, so as not to destroy the beauty and unique atmosphere of lacquer." This exhibition will feature approximately 40 objects and tea ceremony utensils, including incense boxes and plates inspired by the flight of birds, as well as plants and flowing water.
