Yasushi Okada is the son of Yuu Okada of the Okada Kiln, which has a 200-year history in Hagi. He is a promising 39-year-old ceramic artist who is actively participating in open exhibitions throughout Japan.
One day in September, I visited Mr. Tai at Okada Kiln and we had a pleasant chat for quite some time. The workshop is located next to the Hagi Reverberatory Furnace, which was recently registered as a World Heritage Site. You can faintly hear the babbling of a nearby stream, and I remember being captivated by Mr. Tai's beautiful eyes as he spoke passionately about his work and Hagi ware.
What kind of image comes to mind when you think of Hagi ware? This exhibition will not feature typical Hagi ware, but will primarily showcase his recent works in a pale blue glaze, which he has dubbed "Tanseiyu" (pale blue glaze). Although it's blue, it doesn't feel cold; I think its charm lies in its beautiful, lustrous texture that retains a certain gentleness characteristic of Hagi.
Perhaps due to his kind and gentle personality, Mr. Tai enjoys great respect from his fellow ceramic artists of the same generation, which is truly heartwarming. Mr. Tai will be present at the gallery every day during the exhibition period, so we would be grateful if you could offer your critiques to this young Hagi ware potter.

| Biography Biography | Born in 1976 in Hagi City, Yamaguchi Prefecture. Graduated from the Department of Sculpture, Faculty of Fine Arts, Tokyo Zokei University in 2002. 2005: Completed the Ceramics Specialization Course at the Kyoto City Industrial Research Institute. 2008: Tabe Museum of Art Grand Prize, "Exhibition of Art in the Tea Ceremony," selected five times. West Japan Ceramic Art Exhibition: Yamaguchi Prefecture Governor's Award (twice) In 2009, he was selected for the Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition seven times and received the Excellence Award twice at the Yamaguchi Prefecture Art Exhibition. 2010: Western Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition - Asahi Culture Center Award, Yamaguchi Traditional Crafts Exhibition - Asahi Shimbun Award 2012: Kyushu Yamaguchi Ceramics Exhibition - Kumamoto Broadcasting Award, Western Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition - Oita Asahi Broadcasting Award 2013: Kikuchi Biennale Encouragement Award, Hagi Ceramic Artists Exhibition Runner-up Grand Prize Exhibited at the 60th Anniversary Exhibition of the Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition, "From Crafts to KOGEI" (Tokyo, The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, Crafts Gallery) 2015: Japan Ceramics Exhibition - Mainichi Shimbun Award, Yamaguchi Traditional Crafts Exhibition - NHK Yamaguchi Broadcasting Station Award |
