Kohei Nakamura is diligently working on his tea bowl. Moreover, he feels an affinity for old Ido tea bowls, Kohiki ware, or Kuro-Oribe ware, and instead of simply copying them, he is challenging himself to create something of his own Ido, Kohiki, or Kuro-Oribe style by combining them with his own artistic vision. However, I truly cannot understand why he feels the need to cling to these famous bowls of the past. And for now, the Ido-style tea bowls he's been producing with such dedication are quite well-made, but they don't quite measure up to the old, renowned bowls. If that's the case, perhaps it's time to move on from the old and show off my own tea bowls that reflect the present. Seizo Hayashiya |
| Biography Biography | Born in Kanazawa City in 1948 as the third son of Umeyama Nakamura. Graduated from the Sculpture Department of Tama Art University. 1989: Kazuo Yagi Award, '89 Contemporary Ceramics Exhibition - Grand Prix Winner - 1993: Signed a contract with Garth Clark Gallery (New York). 1996 Suntory Museum of Art Grand Prize Special Exhibition '96 1999: International Exhibition of Contemporary Ceramics (Metropolitan Museum of Art) 2012 "Craft Futurism," 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa "Exhibition of Contemporary Masterpieces of Tea Bowls" (Kikuchi Kanjitsu Memorial Chishin Museum) 2013 [Public Collection] The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo; The National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto; The Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York); and others. |
