Introduction

 The defining characteristic of Fumio Matsutani 's <Reiki> is its unique, floating form, rising from a tapered base.

The production method involves first shaping the clay, letting it dry, then trimming the surface to refine its shape, adding grooves to the entire surface, then glazing and bisque firing, glazing again and firing, and finally finishing with sandpaper.

The subtle "Reiki" pottery, with its fine lines on the surface and the way it gradually changes from black to white, is only created by repeating this complex process.

In 2013, he won the Grand Prize at the Kobe Biennale Contemporary Ceramics Competition, and in 2014, he received the Excellence Award at the 31st Tabe Museum "Tea Ceremony Art Exhibition," becoming one of the most noteworthy emerging artists today.

I'm really looking forward to this solo exhibition at Kakiden Gallery, as it will feature around 80 new works, including those <Reiki> and <Reiwan> pieces.

Biography
Biography		Born in 1975 in Tobe-cho, Iyo-gun, Ehime Prefecture.
Graduated from Saga Junior College of Art (now Kyoto Saga University of Arts) in 1996 with a degree in ceramics. Studied under Masayuki Imai and Masamasa Imai, members of the Japan Art Academy.
In 2007, I became independent and began making pottery in Tobe.
In 2010, received the Encouragement Award at the 27th Tabe Museum "Tea Ceremony Art Exhibition Grand Prize".
2012: Received the Nikkei Award at the 2012 Kyoto Craft Biennale. Selected for the 1st "Contemporary Tea Ceremony - Function and Form -" exhibition at the Kikuchi Kanjitsu Memorial Chishin Museum.
2013: Received the Encouragement Award at the 5th Kikuchi Biennale. Received the Grand Prize at the Kobe Biennale 2013 Contemporary Ceramics Competition.
2014: Received the Excellence Award at the 31st Tabe Museum "Tea Ceremony Art Exhibition Grand Prize"
2015: Received the TOKI Oribe Encouragement Award at the 8th Contemporary Tea Ceremony Ceramics Exhibition.
