Kasumi Ueha's works possess a mysterious charm, blending classical patterns with modern, vibrant colors, and unique forms exemplified by her "Chimera" sculptures. The creation of these works involves no preliminary sketches or colorings; the artist concentrates intensely and creates the piece in one go. Because of this, he sometimes goes without sleep for about two days. It's almost like the refined sensibilities of ancient people. Therefore, the continuous patterns she creates likely possess a mysterious power that is also found in the rope patterns and vortices of the Jomon period.
Her husband, Derek Larsen, is also a generous and pure-hearted person. His creations are remarkably straightforward and uplifting. In particular, the natural glaze on the tsukubai (stone basin) and flower vase is beautifully formed and embodies his characteristic "brightness."
Ueha and Derek are complete opposites, but I'm really looking forward to this exhibition because it will feature a collaboration between the two of them.

| Biography Biography | □Kasumi Ueha Born in Kyoto Prefecture in 1978. Graduated from Kyoto City University of Arts, Faculty of Fine Arts, Ceramics Department in 2001. Completed the Ceramics Course at the Kyoto City Industrial Research Institute in 2002. Graduated from Kyoto Prefectural Advanced Technical School for Ceramics in 2003. 2004: First solo exhibition (Kyoto Takashimaya Art and Craft Salon) Selected for the Paramita Ceramics Grand Prize Exhibition in 2008. Exhibited in "Perspectives on Contemporary Crafts: The Power of Decoration" in 2009 (Crafts Gallery, National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo). In 2010, collaborated with Yoshitomo Nara and Hidetoshi Nakata for the Take Action Foundation (Shiga Prefectural Ceramic Art Park/Ibaraki Prefectural Museum of Ceramic Art). Received the Kyoto Prefecture Cultural Award Encouragement Prize in 2011. Received the Kyoto City New Artist Award in 2012. □ Derek Larsen Born in Kansas, USA in 1975. In 1998, he built the first wood-fired kiln in Kansas. Received a design degree from the University of Kansas in 2000. In 2002, I worked as Daniel Lafferty's assistant in Australia and built a wood-fired kiln. In 2003, I obtained a Master's degree in Ceramics from Southern Cross University in Australia. Received the Biennale Prize (Ceramic Art Award) from the National Ceramic Education Association (NCECA) in 2005. 2010 Shiga Prefectural Ceramic Art Park Artist-in-Residence In 2011, I built an anagama kiln in Kakihira, Aichi Prefecture. Selected for the 5th Contemporary Tea Ceremony Ceramics Exhibition in 2012 (Toki City) In 2013, a kiln was built in Nureishi, Keihoku-cho, Kyoto Prefecture. |
