A message for "Team Kutani - The World of Colored Porcelain Exhibition II"

The NHK program "The Unknown British Museum," Episode 2, "Ancient Greece," was a shocking program that revealed that the Parthenon and the Venus de Milo of ancient Greece, known as a "white civilization," were not actually pure white but vividly colored. The colors revealed were strikingly similar to those decorating the interiors of the pyramids of ancient Egypt, suggesting that the idea of Greece as a "white civilization" was a later misconception, and that the colors simply faded over time. The European aesthetic, born from a misunderstanding, came to regard white as the noblest and purest color. This aesthetic continues to influence modern sculpture and even modern ceramics. Even the cave paintings of Lascaux in France, painted 15,000 years ago, used black, red, yellow, brown, and reddish-brown pigments. Color is indispensable to humankind.

Now, regarding the appeal of polychrome porcelain, it is undoubtedly the beautiful harmony of colors. Next are the exquisite lines and the compositional skill of the designs. Masatoshi Okouchi, a doctor of engineering and ceramics researcher, wrote in his essay "Kakiemon, Ko-Kutani, and Iro-Nabeshima" that, "Among the Japanese pottery produced during the Tokugawa period, if one is looking for something with excellent design, exquisite craftsmanship, and elegance, I would recommend Kakiemon, Ko-Kutani, and Okawachi ware, or Nabeshima." The red coloring of Kakiemon is deep and unique. The harmony with the milky white base is important. Iro-Nabeshima excels in the compositional skill of its designs, and each line has dignity. Ko-Kutani is characterized by its bold composition, rich colors, and powerful lines. Its appeal lies in the powerful vitality that permeates its designs and colors.
