Akio Hyakuta is a 39-year-old, mid-career ceramic artist residing in Arita. I met him over a decade ago when I was invited as an advisor to a study group called "Takumi-kai," a gathering of ceramic, textile, and woodworking artists centered around Kakiemon Sakaida. He was a young and energetic man in his twenties, and having studied under Shun'emon Okugawa, a renowned white porcelain artist, he was naturally developing as a white porcelain artist himself. I gave him quite a bit of intense encouragement and guidance, and he grew significantly. He was recommended as a full member of the Japan Crafts Association, and his works became more generous and skillful, showcasing his pottery wheel techniques. This caught the eye of Mr. Yasuda of Kakiden Gallery, leading to this solo exhibition.
