Kazuo Yamaji 's works are characterized by paper-cut patterns created by applying colored slip to stencils. The delicate, soft colors and the meticulous technique of creating the ceramic boxes bring a sense of warmth and enrichment to those who view them. I always think that while the appeal of Yamaji's work comes from the colors and technique, there seems to be another, more "true charm" hidden somewhere else. To put it into words, it is a blend of a lighthearted, sophisticated urban sensibility, literature brimming with refined spirit, and the refreshing breath of youth—all integrated into a single form. | Biography Biography | Born in Kanda, Tokyo in 1949. In 1967, he moved to Montreal, Canada, and began his life as a ceramic artist. After returning to Japan in 1973, he built a kiln in Kasama, Ibaraki Prefecture. Received the "Itaya Hazan Award" at the Ibaraki Prefecture Arts Festival in 2002. In 2005, received the "Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Award" for outstanding work at the 18th Japan Ceramic Art Exhibition. Received the "Japan Crafts Association Award" at the 34th New Ceramics Exhibition in 2006. Selected for the 2nd Kikuchi Biennale Exhibition in 2007. Received the "Special Prize" at the 5th Korea World Ceramics Biennale in 2009. Currently a full member of the Japan Crafts Association, a member of the Ibaraki Prefecture Crafts Association, and a member of the Ibaraki Prefecture Arts Festival. |
