Rei Rusu is one of the most noteworthy young metal sculptors today. Using welding and cutting, she melts the base metal at high temperatures, and by adding her unique techniques to phenomena such as melting, solidification, and distortion, she explores the various expressions of iron. Through this act of discovery, he creates forms. And by seriously engaging with iron as a material, he has come to develop his own perspective on iron, rust, and welding. Rusu's works utilize techniques such as lamination, where small iron chips are stacked and welded together one by one, and welding iron rods. However, these techniques are made more profound and essential by the interplay of time—rusting and decay—and the spatial axis—a solid form born from confronting the materials and making discoveries. This solo exhibition will feature around 40 works of various sizes, including objects and vases, as well as contributions from her husband, metalwork artist Shinji Ichioka, so I'm really looking forward to it. | Biography Biography | <Rei Rusu> Born in Sendai City, Miyagi Prefecture in 1976. Completed graduate studies in fine arts at Tama Art University in 2002. 2004: Expanding Art TSUKUBA 2004 (Tsukuba Museum of Art, Ibaraki Prefecture) The 11th Japan Cultural Arts Encouragement Award and the Japan Contemporary Arts Encouragement Award, both presented by the Japan Foundation for Cultural and Artistic Studies. 2007: From Material x Technology to Form – Fabric and Metal – (Tsukuba Museum of Art, Ibaraki Prefecture) 30th Anniversary Exhibition II: The Power of Crafts – A Perspective for the 21st Century (National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, Crafts Gallery) 2009 PIANISSIMO Tanaka Migiwa/Rusu Rei Exhibition -From the Winter Beach- (Chigasaki City Museum of Art) 2012: Rei Rusu's Tea Room: A Landscape of Rust (Yamaguchi Prefectural Hagi Museum of Art/Urakami Memorial Hall) <Public Collection> Yamaguchi Prefectural Hagi Museum of Art and Urakami Memorial Hall <Shinji Ichioka> Born in Hiroshima Prefecture in 1976.
